Light, vivid ruby color. The fragrance is ridiculous, bright, licorice-inflected dark plum candy fruit and a vivid cracked stone note. Smooth, loaded with ripe, clingy fruit, but with good acidity and medium weight. Gorgeously rich, but not heavy, plummy fruit. Not a wine to age, enjoy this over the next 12-18 months with pastas, pizza, Chinese take out, or, like I did, with take out from Crisp and Juicy, my favorite South American cheap roast chicken joint (in Arlington). B+. Was $15.99 at Arrowine (which is on the same block as Crisp and Juicy). Imported by Michael R. Downey Selections of Lorton, VA.
An idiosyncratic journal of wines I buy from a mix of Internet sources and retailers in the Northern Virginia/D.C. area. Mostly inexpensive and moderately-priced stuff, reflecting my frugal New England roots. Cent anni!

Wow. Never even heard of this grape. Sounds delicious and affordable.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of the Virginia/DC selection so far? Better than Houston? What about prices?
Bill
I can't yet draw any conclusion on what's available here. I only got my first paycheck deposited this weekend, so I've been drinking stuff I brought with me. I love Arrowine. I have been visiting Arlington for years and always stop in. It's a great shop. They always have loads of interesting, reasonable priced wines (like this Ruche). I'm going to do a bleg next to any area readers that drop by and ask for suggestions about what other area stores I should check out.
